Alice in Westland!!!!!!!!

Hello,

For the past 5 weeks our class has been getting ready for a production called Alice in Westland. Instead of the movie Alice in Wonderland we changed the name to Alice in Westland. This was because of us living on the west coast (I think). Some of the things that have been changed in the script are falling down a mineshaft instead of a rabbit hole. Instead of there being a rabbit, there’s 2 possums. There is also a gumboot parade/competion and lot’s of class dance’s/songs.

 

We had to audition for the parts we wanted in the play, then once we were told our parts we had to learn our lines over the holidays. The character I am acting is the Queen of Hearts. She is dramatic and short tempered, and I really enjoy acting her. Meia is Alice, the person who the story follows. Indi is one of the possums, the one who wants to do good, and Finnian is the naughty possum. Tara and Peyton are narrators, the people who tell the story. There’s other characters as well like Alice’s sister, the Mad Hatter, judges and the Tweedles.

 

We got our costumes last week and we did a whole school run through yesterday. We are going to show everyone at the regent theater on the 4th of Decamber. I can’t wait!

Touch in the rain

Hello,

Yesterday, the 30th of October I went to touch. Touch is like rugby, except instead of tackling you just touch the person who’s got the rugby ball. I was in a team with Tara, Max, Ollie, Brandon and Tane. We had 2 year 5/6 Kaniere teams, 2 year 3/4 and 1 year 1/2 teams. Our game started at 4, so we had to be there at 3:30 for a quick practice before the game. 

I was very excited! The first team my team vs, beat us by 2, and we tied the next team. The last team we vs was the other year 5/6 Kaniere team. We were all very excited to vs them! It was pouring down when we vs them and it had been raining during the other games. They beat us by 1, but it was still really close. I really enjoyed it! Dad stayed for the games, because he is the coach of the year 3/4 team, so he drove us home. It was so fun playing touch and I can’t wait for the next game on Thursday!

Rat Poisin in Smokes?!

This week on Wednesday some of the year 6’s went t0 WHS (Westland Highschool) for a Science Expo. I was in a car with Meia, Tara, Indi and Ann was driving. We left during lunch and got there soon after. We had to walk past a heap of highschoolers who were listening to someone talking and it was really awkward, because they all stared at us. The room where the Expo was, was the highschool hall.

We sat down and the guy called Craig (who was telling us about it all) told us about Christopher Columbus, who founded America and who brought the plant tobaco – which has nicotine in it, to America. People liked the plant so they planted more and more. Next we watched a video and wandered around. They had a camera that showed what you would look like if you smoked or vaped when you took a photo of yourself. They also had a tube that showed you stuff that it had in smokes like rat poisin and stuff that goes in cars. They also had vapes that you could smell. They smelt good when you first smelt it, but after a few seconds it made me feel sick. There was a picture of somebody’s teeth who smoked, and they looked they did not look good.  They had other stuff to like real pig lungs and cabnets they people put there cigarets into. I do NOT want to vape or smoke.       It was really interesting and I enjoyed it.

No Food, No Money, No Nothing

This week Kereru has been learning about disputes/protests in our reading time. I am in a group with Meia and Tara, and we had to make a slide about our protest that Miss Lang gave us. Our protest was called Waterfront Dispute. I had never heard of it before so it was really interesting reading and researching about it. Here are some facts that I learnt about.

  • After the Dispute many men had trouble finding jobs because they had been involved in the protest.
  • The government sent Navy people to replace the waterfront workers.

Other groups were learning about the Womens Suffrage Petition and Depresion Riots. Today we have to present out slide infront of the class. We are finished our slide but, I think there might be some groups who haven’t finished yet. We are learning about these protest so, when we learn about the Springbok Tour as a whole class. I’m soooooo excited to learn about it!

Camp!!!!!

1 week before the holidays the year 5 and 6’s went to camp.

It was so fun! I was in a car with Peyton, Caleb M, Dom and my Mum as driver. We went to Bridge Valley Camp near Nelson. There was a small lake/pond and we went kayaking, and swimming in it. They also had 2 waterslides there, plus a plank that you jump off. It was scary jumping off it. At night we would play spotlight, sardines and other games like that. 1 night we did a talent show and another night we watched a movie. We did lot’s of activities like the flying fox, absailing and rock climbing. My favourite activity was the Burma trail blindfolded. The most challenging activity was absailing. We stayed at the camp for 3 nights, and left school on Tuesday and left camp on Friday. I was in a cabin with Meia, Indi, Tara and Dakota. It was the second school camp I’ve been on and I enjoyed it a lot.

“The Hall Under The Lake”

This week we did a new kind of writing called snowball writing. We had a time limit of 12 minutes to write as much as we could for the start, then once everyone had scrunched up their peice of paper (that they had been writing their starting on), we threw them to the end of the classroom.                                                               Next we picked up a random scrunched up peice of paper, unscrunched it, read and started writing the middle part of the story. We did the same thing again, until we had written the end of another story.                                                                   We soon found out what our own story sounded like once we had all finished writing the 1st, 2nd and 3rd peices of others storys. This is what my story was…

“What are we doing?” Meia asked in a timid voice.

“We are going to swim in that lake that I pointed out on the way here,” Indi answered confidently.

“Why are we going there? We are meant to be over with the rest of the group. I was excited for that activity because it was ziplining,” Sophie said, a bit annoyed.

It was a sunny day at Woodend Camp in Christchurch, where the year 5 and 6’s were camping for 5 days. 4 friends called Indi, Sophie, Meia and Tara were walking down to the lake.

Indi was a bit naughty sometimes and was being naughty today by leading them to the lake.

It was a beautiful lake and it was a very hot day. Splash! They jumped in.

“Ahhh! I;m getting sucked down!” All of the 4 girls yelled.

Everything went black.

The 4 girls were sucked to the bottom of the lake. They found a hallway. There were vines growing up the walls. They walked down the hallway and found a door.

Indi opened it and saw a weird man. He was making a type of potion. He looked like a scientist. The 4 girls walked up to him. Indi tapped his shoulder and the man turned around and said,

“I was expecting you 4 girls, but especially you, Indi.” 

Indi said, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

The imposter replied, “I’m good. I will give you each a potion that will make you float back up to the surface, safely.”

Reading Tasks

Myself and Peyton have just finished our planes last month! We first got the cardboard bit of a paper roll and cut it in half, half for me and half for Peyton. We then covered both rolls in paper, folded some paper for wings and stuck them on. We made a practice one which looked kind of bad, but the second (non practice one) looked a lot better. We added a few more details and colours then stuck it up on a shelf. This is what the finished project looked like..

Planes Crash Land!

This week for our reading task we have to make a plane out of class room materials.  My friend Peyton and I are going to do it together.  This is the supplies that we are going to use.  Paper, siccors, glue/PVA glue, colouring pencils/pens, cardboard, popsicle sticks, a skewer and tape.  The book we are basing it off is called Johnny Pohe And The Great Escape, by Phillip Cleaver.  The book is about a man called Johnny Pohe and went into world War ll as  a plane bomber, but his plane crashed and he got captured and tried to escape from the camp where he was kept.  I think it is a really cool story of courage and persperation.

We haven’t started making our planes yet but we have kind of made a plan plane.  We have to fill out a slide show and add pictures and other things on it.  This is what we are basing it off and the picture of the book.

Villain VS Superhero

This week we have been giving a worksheet and we had to fill out the questions, then draw a villain or superhero.  We had to give our villain or superhero a name, age, species, gender, occupation, character traits, a description, thier eye colour, hair colour, skin colour, height and what they wear.  Then we had to write a description about them.  Next we had to draw a picture of them using what we had writen and finally add colour.                                                                                                                             After everyone has finished we will put what we have written on our sheets and put it in AI, to see what the picture looks like.

The Descriptive Bush!

This week Ruma Kereru have been writing about our holidays.  We had to choose a tiny bit of our holiday and write it as descriptivley as we could.  I choose the part of my holidays when I went to my cousins and we continued making our hut in the bush.  After we had written it out on a Google doc, we went on Canva, Ai or Google drawings.  I went on Ai Image Generator and made a picture on there.
