Kapa Haka!

Yesterday – 28/8/24 – I went to Gremouth to preform Kapa Haka.  We have been practising for around 7 weeks (1 day a week).  We had included classes from year 0 to 6.  I went in a car with Mum, Scarlet, Meia and Tara.  We got there around 10:30 am.  We walked around the high school finding our room.  Once we had found it we put our bags down and waited/played till everyone in the Kapa Haka group was there.  Then we went to where we were going to perform and whatched other Kapa Haka groups perform.

We went back to our room and got changed into our uniform, then had a couple of practisies before we went to line up outside.  We waitied for a while in the line before we walked into the room we were were going to preform.  The lady called us up the jouniors up onto the stage and they preformed head, shoulders, knees and toes in Maori.  Then I and all the other people in our group went on stage.  We preformed our school song first and then 2 others.  Next the boys did the haka and last of all everyone did our last song.

After we had finnished preforming and had walked off stage we got changed, then me Tara, Scarlete and Meia went to get a fake tatoo of a Muku.  We stayed there for a bit longer and then went back to the car around 2:00pm.  We got back to school at about 2:30 and stayed at school till 3:00.  It was really fun preforming in Kapa Haka!

Have you ever performed in Kapa Haka?

If so what was it like?

Country Research

In this last week we have each choosen a country to research on.  I have choosen Australia.  Here are some facts about it…

  • Australia is the only country in the world that does not have an active volcano.
  • Australia has 3 times more sheep then people.
  • The Australian outback covers most of the country.
  • Australia is the worlds biggest Island but smallest continent.
  • The Austalian Alps get more snowfall then Switzerland.

We have also done our countrys animal, flower and motto.  Heres mine…

The Kangaro is Australias animal, like the Kiwi is New Zealands. The main flower for Australia is the Acacia Pycnantha.  The Acacia Pycnantha or the Golden Wattel as it is most commonly known, is a tree and can grow up to 26 feet (8 meters) and has flattened leaf stalks instead of true leaves.

Australia has no official motto or chant but they use “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi!”

We have also done landmarks for our country…

  1. Sydney Opera House
  2. Uluru
  3. Heart Reef
  4. Port Authur
  5. Kakadu

I hope you have learnt something about Australia.

Whats your favourite country and why?

Paragraph 10

Paragraph 10

“Okay,” I said to my best friend Isabella.  “First we have to find the Eleese, then we talk to all of the sea towns that know about it.  Next we sneak up behind the Elesse and kill it with what weapons they have.”  “This is so crazy…  I can’t wait!  I can’t believe we’re doing this Tomorrow though.”  “I know, I can’t believe it either.”  “Have you told your Mum yet?”  “No”  “Oh.”  But she’ll find out soon enough.”  “Sophie,” my Mother called, “ It’s time for Isabella to go back to her house now.”  “Okay” I called down.  “Now try to have a good sleep and I’ll see you first thing tomorrow.”  “Bye,” replied Isabella.  “Bye” I replied back.  As I lay in bed that night I thought about the plan.  I hoped everything would work out all right.

Have I captured you in this book yet?

Is it good?

Unseen Depths – Paragraph 9

My 9th paragraph…

Paragraph 9

“What happened,” I asked the plant.  “The Eleese came in and wiped out this whole town.  It was looking for something I’m not sure what though.  This was the last house he came to and it took Rusty away.  I’ve been lying here since until you came along.”  I thought for a moment then I said “I’m going to find that Eleese and DESTROY IT!!!!!!!!!”  I swam out of Rustys house and swam home as fast as I could.  I pushed open the door and barged in.  My Mother looked surprised.  “ Why do you have that angry face?  And why did you barge on in like that, Sophie?”  I didn’t answer, instead I swam up to my room and started to make a plan.

Potato Olympics – Potato Dance Off

Today in Kereru we did a Potato Dance Off.  Let me explain.  We have just started doing the Potato Olympics today because of the Olympics.  Our first event was Potato Dance Off.  We have to grab our potato and spin it on a desk well someone else times it and see how long it will spin for.  Who evers potato spins the longest wins.

We first did a few practices first and then we vs each other.  And…

I got into the finals!  I vs Nixon in the finals but Nixon won.  Amelia vs Caden and Amelia won.  I came 4th overall!  Something that I found challenging was keeping the potato spinning on the table without it falling off.  Something that I enjoyed was timing other people.  And something that I think would work better is spinning it a different way.

Would you want to do a Potato Olympics?

What is your favorite event in the Olympics?

Resigning From…

This week was a really short week and we have been learning about how to format a formal letter.

Here is mine.

Miss K. Lang

℅ Kaniere School

Camp St KANIERE

Dear Miss Lang

My name is Sophie Morris and I am a year 5 student in your Kereru class.  I am writing to tell you that I am resigning from Kaniere School.  I will be resigning effective on 14 July 2024.

I am really going to miss Kaniere School, and everything about it and in it.   Here are a few memories I am sure I will never forget.  The first 1 is when we were on camp in Tui at Shantytown, we were eating our food and at the table and someone, (I can’t remember who,) scrunched up a bit of paper and started a paper fight by throwing it at someone, (Again I can’t remember who).  Another memory is when we were outside in the fort playing tag.  One of the people in our class were in and Meia was on a stump.  The person was coming up and Meia skydived into a bush.  My friend and I were watching and we cracked up laughing.  But Meia was lucky, Okay.

I am resigning because I am going to become a singer.  I have been given a job and I would like to take it.  I will only be on the side except when the main singer (Lisa) is sick or can’t be there.  I can’t wait to get there and I’m sure I’m going to enjoy it.  I will be traveling all around the world in this career and I will get 20 thousand dollars every 3 weeks.

I have loved all your teaching and everything you have done for me.  I will miss all you teachers and helpers at Kaniere School.  I have had good times and bad times, as well as okay times.  I will come back to Kaniere School in a couple of years when I’m really rich and see you all again.

Yours Sincerely

Sophie Morris

It was really fun doing this and learning how to make formal letters because I’ve never wrote a formal letter before.

What would your dream job be?

More Writing!

Today I have been doing some more writing on my Unseen Depths.  Here is my 3rd paragraph…

Paragraph 3

As I wondered, a deep, booming voice said, “You are going back in time when this ship sunk!”  I quickly swam trying to get away, but instead I swam closer to the voice.  Suddenly a saw a ship in the distance come out of nowhere.  I could see the sun shining down into the water.  The ship was bobbing gently up and down on the waves.  I looked beneath me and a HUGE whale shot out of the water.  As I looked closely at the scene I saw purple spikes all over its back.  The people in the ship  started shooting arrows and spares at the creature.  It looked like the creature was getting really mad.  It started puffing up to a bigger size than 20 of the ships.  The creature crashed onto the ship and broke the ship into a million pieces.

If you haven’t read my other 2 paragraphs you can go read them here…

Paragraph 1

Beneath the rough and tumble of waves, in the heart of the ocean I swam, gliding gently through the water.  As I turned to my right I could see glimpses of lights ahead.  I swam closer, and realised that they were shiny diamonds.  Soon I could see that there were coral gardens and coral houses as well.  Little fish started coming out from all the houses, talking in different languages I was sure I wasn’t familiar with.  I kept on swimming through the town taking in everything I saw.  As I swam out of the little town – which was more like a village – I came to a clearing.  I stood staring at it, not sure what it was or if I should go inside.

Paragraph 2

As I stood wondering, I saw a glimpse in the “thing”.  My curiosity took over me, and I swam inside.  As I swam I realised that this “thing,” was a ship.  A ship that had been underneath the sea for what looked like centuries.  The ship had turned into a tumble of rotten pieces of wood, with bits of seaweed and coral wrapped around the rotten wood planks.  I kept on swimming through what was left of the ship.  As I turned a corner I saw more glimpses.  I swam through the rough and tumble of the ship for hours.  When I was just about to go back to the sea town, I saw glimpses again.  I followed the glimpses of light and soon found a portal.  As I was looking at the portal it suddenly began to glow a VERY bright pink.  Before I knew what was happening it had sucked me into the portal!!  I looked around me wondering where I was.

Jelly Fish, not Monster

Run, Kick, Score!!!

Today some of the seniors went to soccer at Cass Square.  I went in a car with Tara, Finnian and Caden, there and back.  There was around 350 kids, 40 teams and 13 schools all the way from South Westland to Grey Valley.  Luckly I was in a team with all my friends.  First we versed Kokatahi, and we won.  (Our team got 5 scores and Kokatahi got 0.) After that game we versed Karoro,  it was way harder but we still won.  The scores were 2 – 1.

Next we versed Barrytown.  We didn’t win that one as we versed year 7 and 8.  After we had a quick break, we versed St Marys.  We won that one, but I think it was a harder as well.  We versed 3 other teams and won all of those.  So we won 5 games and lost 1.  I think we did pretty well and I enjoyed it heaps!!!!!!!!!
